On August 23rd, multiple sources reported that a school bus accident near Boynton Beach had left four people critically injured. School bus accidents are all too common in Florida, and this incident raises fresh questions about safety in school districts. If you were injured in a similar incident, contact an experienced Delray Beach bus accident lawyer for further guidance.

School Bus Driver Allegedly to Blame for Serious Collision

After initial reports, CBS 12 News followed up with an update, alleging that the school bus driver was at fault. Palm Beach County officials apparently concluded that the school bus driver attempted a left-hand turn, “failing to yield” before colliding with a Ford F-150 with the right of way.

The collision involved the front of the school bus striking the driver’s side of the F-150, sending both vehicles into the median. Those on board the school bus suffered only minor injuries, with the driver and a 16-year-old passenger being the only ones hurt. On the other hand, all four occupants of the pickup truck suffered critical injuries. The driver and one passenger both suffered the worst medical issues, while the other two passengers were only slightly injured.

First responders at the scene had to use the “jaws of life” to extricate the passengers from the mangled F-150, implying the truck was heavily damaged by the collision. To save time, paramedics reached through the wreckage to treat the injuries as best they could while firefighters worked to cut through the mangled truck. It took over an hour to extricate the final victim. Reports do not indicate whether the school bus driver is facing any criminal charges.

What Are My Legal Options After a School Bus Accident in Boynton Beach?

Perhaps the most obvious option after a school bus accident is to sue the parties who contributed to your injuries. If the school bus driver was to blame for the crash, you can sue them and the overall school district. While it might seem strange to sue a school district for the misconduct of a bus driver, you must remember that the school district was responsible for hiring this individual.

Negligent hiring practices can easily endanger not only students, but also members of the general public. Unfortunately, school districts often fail to flag clear issues like advanced age, cognitive decline, eyesight problems, and poor driving records when hiring school bus drivers. The truth is that driving a school bus is one of the least rewarding professional driving careers, and much higher-paying positions are available in the trucking industry, for example. This leaves few reliable and safe candidates for school bus driving positions.
