Florida Jury Finds Tesla to Blame for Autopilot Crash

In a landmark decision, a jury in Florida has ruled that Tesla is partially responsible for a fatal accident that claimed two lives. This is not the first lawsuit of its type, and the EV company has faced difficult questions about its self-driving technology for years. If you were injured in a Boca Raton Tesla accident, an experienced injury attorney may be able to help you pursue compensation.

Tesla Ordered to Pay Victims $240 Million After Autopilot Crash

In August of 2025, KPLC TV reported that a jury in Florida had decided that Tesla was responsible for a 2019 fatal crash. As a result, Tesla must now pay the victims $240 million. The case highlights the fact that auto companies may be held accountable for defective software, including self-driving technology.

The case stems from a 2019 accident in Key Largo, not far from Boca Raton. The motorist who caused the accident went through flashing lights, a stop sign, and finally a T-intersection at 62 miles per hour before slamming into a parked vehicle. The vehicle contained a couple who had pulled over to look at the stars on the dark night.

Their Chevrolet Tahoe flew into the air after the collision, sailing over 75 feet and landing in a wooded area. The collision also ejected the female victim from the vehicle, and her lifeless body was later recovered nearby by first responders. The male victim survived but suffered numerous fractures and a traumatic brain injury. Even six years later, he still walked into the courtroom with a pronounced limp.

The driver was clearly negligent, as he admitted to being on his phone seconds before the crash. However, the case focused mostly on Tesla’s involvement. The plaintiff’s counsel argued that the EV company should not have allowed the defendant to use the self-driving technology on dark, rural roads.

Drivers who use the Autopilot feature must pay close attention to the road, even if they are not actively controlling the steering wheel. This was clearly not the case in the Florida crash, as the driver admitted to being distracted. The question raised during the trial is whether Tesla should have “detected” that the driver was distracted before disengaging the Autopilot feature. Clearly, the jury believed that the answer was “yes.”

In its defense, Tesla argued that the sole cause of the crash was the fact that the driver dropped his phone. However, this defense did not convince the jury.
