Delray Beach Considers New E-Bike Laws After String of Accidents

Like many municipalities in the United States, Delray Beach is facing a serious uptick in e-bike accidents. Cyclists, runners, and other individuals have become concerned about the speed and recklessness of e-bike riders in Delray Beach. Many residents have pointed out that the most dangerous riders seem to be children and teens.

The new ordinances may require e-bike riders to heavily restrict the speeds of e-bikes while keeping them off sidewalks. Other requirements may involve mandatory identification cards and helmets for youth riders. Advocates have pointed out that while some may view this as punishing child e-bike riders, the laws should actually keep them safe. The state has been rocked by numerous child fatalities and critical injuries involving e-bikes over the past few months and years.

Nearby Municipalities Have Taken Similar Steps

The move echoes similar legal changes made by neighboring municipalities. In Palm Beach County, e-bikes and e-scooters have been completely banned from sidewalks and trails (most notably Lake Trail). Boynton Beach has also been considering its own set of e-bike laws throughout 2026.

Florida has also created its own set of statewide e-bike restrictions. In June of 2026, Florida announced an e-bike speed limit of 10 miles per hour on all sidewalks. Another change requires e-bike riders to make a visible sound when passing or overtaking pedestrians. Violations would be treated like traffic tickets, leading to $30 fines.

Unfortunately, there are growing concerns that teens simply don’t care about the laws we pass. Pedestrians and non-powered cyclists may continue to suffer life-changing (or life-ending) injuries due to reckless e-bike riders traveling at breakneck speeds along sidewalks.
