Cruise Ship Lifeguard Arrested for Alleged Child Sex Abuse

Lifeguard

On August 24th, 2026, NBC Miami reported that a cruise ship lifeguard had been arrested by Florida officials on charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. He is alleged to have engaged in intercourse with a 17-year-old minor on a cruise. These kinds of reports have become all too common in Florida, and they often lead to cruise ship sexual assault lawsuits in Boca Raton.

38-Year-Old Exchanged Numbers With Teen Before Sexual Encounter in Cabin

Officials say that the teen and the 38-year-old lifeguard exchanged numbers during the cruise before the pair met and had a sexual encounter at a cabin. The pair then met again another night for a second sexual encounter. Under Florida law, a 17-year-old cannot consent to sex, and therefore the encounter fell under the legal classification of statutory rape.

Officials also noted that the defendant is a Guatemalan national, which means that immigration proceedings against him are already underway while he remains jailed in Miami. The cruise line has released an official statement condemning the child sex abuse, stating that they “notified the relevant authorities” as soon as they became aware of the misconduct.

However, one might argue that the cruise line should have done more to prevent this from occurring in the first place. When the cruise line hired the defendant, did they carry out a proper background check? Was there any past evidence or incidents that might have suggested this individual was prone to preying on minors? These are questions the cruise line may have to answer during a subsequent sexual assault lawsuit in Boca Raton.

Cruise Lines Must Educate Their Employees About Applicable Sex Laws

The age of consent is just 14 in Guatemala. Although there is no excusing the lifeguard’s decision to take advantage of a girl less than half his age, one has to wonder whether he realized that the age of consent in Florida was significantly higher. The duty to educate employees about these laws undoubtedly falls on the shoulders of the cruise line, especially with the legal ambiguity associated with operating with a multi-national workforce in international waters.

It is not clear whether the family has decided to pursue legal action against the cruise line, or whether the two parties are already engaging in settlement negotiations. These kinds of incidents are actually quite common on cruise lines, ranging from voyeurism and consensual sex with a 17-year-old to full-on rape.

Can a Cruise Ship Sexual Assault Lawyer in Boca Raton Help Me?

Although cruise lines often advertise their vacations as being “family-friendly,” the truth is that minors are incredibly vulnerable to sexual predators while roaming these vessels. If your family has suffered this type of trauma and harm, consider contacting a cruise ship sexual assault lawyer in Boca Raton. Steinberg Law has experience with these types of cases, and our firm may be able to guide your family toward meaningful compensation.
